Close to Hadrian's Wall and set in gorgeous countryside, this is the perfect base from which to explore the North East. Historic Hexham Abbey is close by and the park is within 20 miles of Newcastle and Gateshead. With many charming villages and country pubs in the area, the region is home to a huge array of wildlife and has some beautiful walks.
Nethead Mines at Alston gives a good insight into the history of mining on the North Pennines, the people that worked there and the lifestyle they had. The Roman Fort at Binchester has been partly excavated to reveal the ancient Roman bath house and its incredible 1700 year old underfloor heating system!
Newcastle is a good place to head to eat out - choose from around 60 different Chinese dishes at Lau's Buffet King in the heart of 'Chinatown' or eat Italian at La Toscana. Hamsterley Forest as plenty of cycle and walking trails and is the perfect starting point from which to explore the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
