With spectacular views over the beach, this superbly located park has a wealth of facilities and is within easy travelling distance of both Newcastle and Sunderland. Alnwick Castle (best known for doubling as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films) is close by as is Fame Island where you can spend hours watching the birds and seals.

Adventurelands in Newcastle-upon-Tyne has climbing frames, towers and rope bridges to keep the children occupied - and the Stephenson Railway Museum in North Shields is an interactive museum which is great for all ages. Take a tour round Newcastle United's stadium and look at the football photos and memorabilia from across the years.
